1964 Gulf of Tonkin non-Incident

The US-Vietnam war was begun based on the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, which never actually happened.

There was a second non-incident on August 4. Then, on August 5, President Lyndon Johnson asked Congress "for a resolution expressing the unity and determination of the United States in supporting freedom and in protecting peace in southeast Asia." I find it especially ironic that he called his war "protecting peace."
