1804 Haiti declares independence

This was the first slave revolt that became a revolution, the event that called into question the universality of the French Revolution itself (indeed, liberty, equality and fraternity, for all? or for whites?). This event struck terror in the hearts of the slave owners in the US South, who feared that people would learn that they too could become masters of their own destiny. For that, Haiti has been subject to generations of imperial siege and ruin. The struggle is not over.
