1974 Karen Silkwood's death

On this day, 13 November 1974 plutonium plant worker and union activist Karen Silkwood was mysteriously killed in a car crash while on her way to meet a New York Times reporter with a bundle of evidence on health and safety violations at her workplace. The bundle of evidence was never found, and although she was killed in a front-on collision, the rear of her car had been damaged and contained paint chips, leading her supporters to believe she was rammed off the road. She and her apartment were also contaminated heavily with plutonium, which the company claimed she did herself to smear the firm. Her family sued the company after her death and were awarded nearly $1.4 million.
